What is the right course for me?

Features of LFA Diploma

  • One Year
  • Full-time: 30+ hours per week (some weekends and evenings required) 44 weeks of tuition over 11 months.
  • Up to 20 x 2min films
  • Up to 5 x 4min films
  • Up to 5 x 8min films
  • Kodak commercials
  • Film and digital exercises/workshops.
  • Everyone directs a 2 min film, 50% get to direct a graduation film, rest get to do a Kodak commercial.
  • In depth training in 16 roles, all key areas of filmmaking-Students perform all key roles during 2min films.
  • All credits from the 4 and 8 minute films are put on graduation DVD (Directors and Producers must ‘pitch’ to work on graduation films).
  • Excellent tutor-student ratio: 16-20 students.
  • Minimum age 18 (average late 20s).
  • Some experience of filmmaking required, need to send in examples of written and visual work and attend interview.
  • The Diploma offers excellent standard of professional film training to kick start a career in filmmaking.

  • 4 weeks/20 days
  • Full-time: 125 hours of tuition
  • up to five 2-min films, dependant on student numbers
  • Foundation training in key disciplines from concept to screen
  • AVID and Steenbeck editing practical experience
  • Average 10 students (max 15)
  • Excellent tutor-student ratio
  • Minimum age 18 (average late 20s)
  • No experience of filmmaking required
  • People considering serious full time move into filmmaking as a foundation course to further training/finding runner jobs or work experience for ‘traditional’ route into career
  • Course Leader feedback and assessment
  • Assistance with visa application for international students given.
  • Key role (Director/Producer/DOP/Editor) and credits on up to 4 other films in supporting roles
  • Showreel produced on completion to assist finding work
  • Award: Certificate in Filmmaking on successful completion of course (end of the course test and tutors assessment)
  • Selected shorts submitted to festivals
  • One month taster course provides a broad knowledge and practical experience of short filmmaking and helps students gain entry level general assistant / running work in the industry
  • Need to make commitment of 4 weeks – could be fitted inbetween jobs, instead of holiday/summer break or straight after further education

Features of LFA Foundation

  • Part-time Foundation: 6 days (usually consecutive 6 Saturdays)
  • Full-time Foundation in a Week: 6 days (Monday to Saturday with screening on Sunday)
  • 45hrs tuition
  • Everyone writes a short scene in pairs
  • Shoot your script on S16mm film and edit with your filmmaking partner
  • Taster of wide range of on-set roles
  • Feedback and informal screening of completed work – no formal assessment
  • Certificate and DVD showreel of course films awarded on successful completion of the course
